Liberation Party
The National Liberation Party (PLN)was created on October 12, 1951 as a result of the events of the revolution of 1948. Its aim was to construct a democracy based on social justice and political liberty and its founder was Don Pepe, three time president and Costa Rican national hero. Don Pepe's son, Jose Maria Figueres, served as president between 1994 and 1998. The PLN has traditionally supported state intervention to ensure decent living standards for Costa Ricans. Today, the PLN holds 17 of 57 total seats in the national legislature and proudly claims 6 of 15 past presidents as party members.
