About Faces of Costa Rica

While I was a Master's student at the University of Florida, I built the Faces of Costa Rica Web site as my project-in-lieu of thesis for my degree. My committee members were Professor Melinda McAdams (chair), Dr. Kurt Kent (member) and Dr. Elizabeth Lowe (member). The information included in this site is by no means all inclusive, but rather information that I gathered during a three month stay in Costa Rica as well as through months of research. All interviews and conversations took place in Spanish, and I have tried to translate as accurately as possible. I translated all information for this site myself, using Costa Ricans and a dictionary as references. I took all photographs on the site, unless otherwise noted in the credits. Questions, comments and suggestions are welcome.

Parts of this site require Macromedia FlashPlayer 7.0. If you do not already have it, you can download it from Macromedia's Web site.

In addition to interviews and personal experience, I have done research on Costa Rica using a variety of sources. Several of the most important sources are listed below. You can also view a complete bibliography.

  • Estado de La Nacion-- Statistics on Costa Rican development produced yearly by the Costa Rican government (in Spanish).
  • Human Development Index 2003 -- 2003 ranking for United Nations Development Program's human development indicatiors (HDI) index. Includes information on Costa Rica., published by the United Nations Development Program.
  • UNICEF on Costa Rica- Offers statistics and information on the situation of children in Costa Rica
